“Life before death” – the documentary film of the Australian company Moonshine Movies. The movie tells about the people having incurable diseases who are interfaced to pain, about their families and the doctors fighting changing culture of medicine and to focus it not only on treatment, but also on care of the patients who have faced problems of a disease menacing to life.
In Kazakhstan 6 specialized institutions of rendering the palliative help and unit of the public organizations working in this sphere today function. “Annually about 17 thousand people die of oncological diseases in Kazakhstan, and the number of the diseased increases by 5%”, reports Interfax Kazakhstan news agency. For the country with the population more than 16 million people of such number of palliative establishments aren’t enough.
Raushan Dosmagambetova, rector KARGMU, the professor, considers: “For training of specialists on palliative medicine it is necessary to create training programs at dodiplomny and post-degree levels. This work is already begun by the staff of chair of oncology of our university. Many students already chose palliative medicine as elective discipline”.
Nadezhda Kozachenko, the director of OO “Credo”, the professor, speaks: “Today one of possible solutions of a problem of access to the palliative help at incurable diseases is the organization of work of the multidisciplinary team “Hospice at Home”. It will allow to make the palliative help available. For this purpose it is necessary to increase first of all knowledge of various structures – from the people making decisions at legislative level, to direct performers of a state order on rendering the medical help in out-patient conditions, and also to attract the profile NGO having specially trained employees”.
After display, the audience, exchanging opinions on the movie, suggested to show it to members of the government, deputies of Mazhilis of RK that those, in turn, could experience a problem. Display of the movie was organized by OO “Credo” with support of KARGMU and Fonda Soros Kazakhstan.

About the Hospice at Home project
The Hospice at Home project – a pilot initiative of OO “Credo” which was carried out in Temirtau the Karaganda region in 2011 with Legal Reform program support Fonda Soros Kazakhstan. This project gave the chance to receive sick AIDS in Temirtau the individual plan of treatment, professional leaving of medical workers, to give psychological and spiritual support to patients and their relatives. Within the project the multidisciplinary team from six people where entered the resuscitator, nurses, the psychologist and social workers was formed. Besides studying of the main documents and provisions on the palliative help this team observed 16 sick III and the IV stages of HIV infection. Experts also worked with relatives of patients as during lifetime, and after withdrawal of patients from life.
